Summary

Two important studies are presented in this issue. On one hand, the plague in Monaco in 1631, on the other hand, the journeys of Prince Albert I in Africa. Arts are obviously discussed thanks to the publication of a musical correspondence and the early days of the cinema. The contemporary fortifications within the region are also studied. MONACO AND THE PLAGUE

During the Middle Ages and the modern times, the region between Genoa and Marseille was exposed to the propagation of the plague, notably because of its shipping activity. Between the 14th and the 18th centuries, this curse damaged the region on a recurring basis. A chronicle from the 17th century describes this infamous epidemic of 1631. (full text in French)

After the surrender of French armies in Sedan in 1870, the Italian government passed a legislation, one year after, regarding the restructuring of the defensive system in the Alpes. The French government, for its part, assigned to the General Séré de Rivières, the “Comité de Défense” in order to defend its borders. The latter, fortified the border regions, among which the Alpes-Maritimes. (full text in French)

Prince Albert I, famous oceanographer, was also an Africa explorer. This continent had an important place during his sailor and scientist career. On several occasions between 1865 and 1921, he travelled up and down Africa, in particular in Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Ethiopia and Canary Islands. The prince discovered the local societies and participated to numerous hunting parties. (full text in French)

The cinematograph was born in France in 1895. Two years later, it expanded in Monaco but remained episodic until 1908. In 1909 and 1910, the cinema was suddenly developed before the war. From 1919, it took part to the Monegasque everyday life. (full text in French)
